Summary itinerary idea

North America → Athens (roundtrip)

~$900

via hub, book 3–4 months out

Daily spend on islands

$180–240

food, activities, transport — well under budget

One of the biggest advantages of Greece over long-haul alternatives: travelers from the UK and Ireland fly direct in 4 hours for ~$280 roundtrip. North American travelers have the longer haul but Greece in September is still comfortably within a $2,000–2,500 all-in budget.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Everyone flies to Athens

North American travelers: allow a full travel day via hub (SFO/JFK/ORD → ATH). UK/Ireland travelers: direct on Aer Lingus, Ryanair, or Aegean (~4hr). Meet up in Athens — stay near Monastiraki, Plaka, or Koukaki neighborhoods, all walkable.

Day 2

Athens — Acropolis & Plaka

Go early (8am) to beat the heat at the Acropolis. Then National Archaeological Museum for the afternoon. Dinner in Psiri neighborhood — order the lamb and anything with feta. Book Acropolis tickets online in advance (€30pp).

Day 3

Ferry Athens (Piraeus) → Paros

Take the morning high-speed ferry (Seajets or Golden Star) from Piraeus — 3.5–4hr, €41–55pp. Arrive afternoon. Paros is the anti-Mykonos: same whitewashed beauty, a fraction of the crowds and price. Naoussa village for dinner.

Day 4

Paros — beaches & Antiparos day trip

Morning at Golden Beach (windsurfing capital of Greece). Afternoon: take the €2 ferry to tiny Antiparos — a 7-minute crossing to one of the most unspoiled islands in the Cyclades. Caves, beaches, no crowds. Back to Paros for dinner at sunset.

Day 5

Short ferry Paros → Naxos (~30–45 min)

The fastest hop on the route — €10–15pp. Naxos is the largest Cyclades island and the most self-sufficient: ancient ruins, mountain villages, excellent local food (cheese, potatoes, kitron liqueur), and the best swimming beaches in the group. Drop bags, find a taverna.

Day 6

Naxos — beaches, villages & ruins

Rent an ATV or car (€25–40/day) to reach Plaka Beach (long, uncrowded, backed by dunes) and the mountain village of Apiranthos — whitewashed marble streets, Byzantine churches, genuinely local. Temple of Demeter if you're up for a short hike. Naxos is the chill day everyone needs mid-trip.

Day 7

Ferry Naxos → Santorini (~2hr high-speed)

Seajets or Hellenic Seaways, ~€40–60pp. Arrive in Santorini and immediately understand why it's the most photographed island on earth. Stay in Fira (more affordable, well-located) — Oia is worth it only if your budget allows the premium. Check in, rooftop drinks, caldera views.

Day 8

Santorini — Oia & volcano cruise

Morning: hike the rim trail from Fira to Oia (8km, 2–3hr, bucket-list). Afternoon: caldera boat tour — volcanic hot springs, Thirassia island, swimming off the boat. Come back for the Oia sunset (get there 45 min early for a good spot). This is the postcard day of the whole trip.

Day 9

Santorini — Akrotiri & black sand beaches

Morning: Akrotiri — the "Greek Pompeii," a Bronze Age city buried by the volcano. Underrated and uncrowded compared to the Acropolis. Afternoon: Perissa black sand beach or Red Beach. Last dinner in Santorini — splurge on a restaurant with a caldera view. This is the night for it.

Day 10

Fly home from Santorini (JTR)

Santorini airport has direct seasonal flights to London, Dublin, and other European cities — verify schedules on Ryanair and Aer Lingus. North American travelers: fly the short JTR→ATH hop (€40, 25 min) then connect home. Do NOT take a ferry back to Athens — too much risk of delay affecting the flight home.

Key rule: never rely on a ferry to catch an international flight home. Book a flight from Santorini or allow an overnight buffer in Athens before flying home.

Ferry logistics summary

Piraeus → Paros 3.5–4hr · high-speed · Seajets / Golden Star ~€41–55pp
Paros → Naxos 30–45 min · short hop · Blue Star or local ~€10–15pp
Naxos → Santorini 2hr · high-speed catamaran · Seajets ~€40–60pp
Total ferry cost 3 legs · all booked at ferryhopper.com or directferries.com ~€90–130pp
Book ferries 2–3 months before September travel — high-speed cats on Naxos→Santorini sell out fastest. Economy deck seats are fine for 2hr hops; book a cabin only for overnight routes (not needed on this itinerary).

Accommodation guide — per island

Athens (1 night)

Aim for Monastiraki, Koukaki, or Plaka. Budget boutique hotels run €80–130/night for a double. Solo: budget €90–120 for a private single. AirBnB is cheaper and works well in Athens.

Paros (2 nights) best value

Naoussa or Parikia center. Nice studios and small hotels: €80–140/night double. More affordable than any other island on this route. September prices 20–30% below August.

Naxos (2 nights) best value

Naxos Town (Chora). Large supply of accommodation keeps prices honest: €80–150/night double. One of the best food-to-price ratios in the Cyclades.

Santorini (3 nights) book now

Fira: €150–250/night. Oia: €250–500+/night. The caldera-view rooms are worth it once — but book 6+ months out, they disappear. September helps but Santorini is never cheap.

The upgrade option — swap Naxos for Milos

Milos is the "secret" island that regulars swear by: otherworldly Sarakiniko moonscape beach, fishing villages built into cliffs (Klima), catacombs, and far fewer tourists than Santorini or Paros. It's a slightly longer ferry from Paros (~2hr) but the route Paros→Milos→Santorini works well. Prices are similar to Naxos. If anyone in your group has already done Naxos, swap it for Milos — it's genuinely bucket-list.
