36 month Nomad Plan
Working draft, September 2026
Thirty-six months, late February 2027 to February 2030. One region per year, one base per month or per visa block, Seattle and Boise every July, and an en-suite bathroom every night.
The shape of it
One row per year, March through February. Color is the region and the visa clock.
Rules
- Housing
- Cheapest option with an en-suite bathroom at every stop. That is the one hard rule; a kitchen is the strong preference. Coliving with a private bath, a studio, or a furnished monthly apartment. Hotels are a last resort or a deliberate splurge, and the hotel names on the cards are for the short stays only. Outsite is the first choice wherever it has a house on the route, because the membership rate applies and the slow-season deals from November through February line up with the Lisbon stay. Nomadico, booked at nomadico.bookinglayer.com, is the second network, with houses in Medellín and in Kotor, Montenegro. Where neither has a house, use operators from the Global Coliving Directory, with Habyt and Coliving.com as the platform fallbacks. Do not use Flatio in Mexico City or Querétaro, because its listings sit too far from the right neighborhoods.
- Pace
- One to three months per base, matching how monthly rentals bill. Day trips and one short trip per base. No three-to-five-day hops.
- Budget
- $4,500 a month covers housing, food, local transport, incidentals, and every flight. Cheap months (Mexico, Colombia, Thailand, Albania) pay for expensive ones (Tokyo, London, Seattle, New York). Rugs, clothing, the Egypt tour, Spanish classes, and real estate fees are discretionary and outside the monthly number.
- Fixed dates
- Boise every late July for the standing appointment. Seattle is the base, Boise is three to five days.
- Visas
- Mexico: up to 180 days per entry at the officer's discretion; carry proof of onward travel. Thailand: the five-year DTV, valid through 2030, 180 days per entry plus one in-country extension. Vietnam: 90-day e-visa. Japan: 90 days visa-free. UK: ETA before boarding. Schengen: 90 days in any rolling 180, used as two blocks, 85 days from September 20 to December 13, 2028 and 60 days from May 1 to June 29, 2029. Albania: up to one year visa-free. Turkey and Egypt: e-visa or visa on arrival. Cyprus: outside Schengen today but moving toward joining; if it joins before 2029, the two Cyprus weeks move to Turkey or Montenegro.
- Trains and flights
- Trains inside Europe where convenient: London to Munich, every leg inside Spain, Madrid to Strasbourg. Flights where rail is not practical: Munich to Lisbon, Lisbon to Spain, everything east of Strasbourg. Every flight stays inside the Delta or Alaska partner networks. Delta's side is SkyTeam: Delta, Aeroméxico, Air France, KLM, Virgin Atlantic, Korean Air, and Vietnam Airlines. Alaska's side is oneworld plus Alaska's own partners: Alaska, American, British Airways, Iberia, JAL, Finnair, Qatar, and Singapore Airlines. Singapore Airlines counts through Alaska Mileage Plan. Emirates partners with neither, so it is a card transfer redemption only. United, Copa, Avianca, TAP, Turkish, Aegean, EgyptAir, ANA, and Lufthansa are Star Alliance; cash only, and only where no partner flies the leg. Every fare includes one checked bag. Check the linear dimension limit on the roller trunk, not just the weight, before each booking.
- Points
- Transfer partners that matter: World of Hyatt at one to one (best value); Flying Blue and Virgin Atlantic for Delta, Aeroméxico, Vietnam Airlines, and Korean Air award seats; Avios for Alaska, American, JAL, and Iberia award seats; KrisFlyer; Emirates Skywards. Delta and Alaska do not take card transfers, so those miles come from flying and awards go through the partners above. Marriott takes transfers at a poor rate: pay Marriott on the card, book Hyatt with points.
- Hotels
- Marriott, Hyatt, or an independent boutique, and only after the cheaper en-suite options are checked. Hyatt House and Residence Inn have full kitchens for the short Seattle and Boise stays. Each card names the Hyatt or Marriott option where one exists. Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy and Homes & Hideaways by World of Hyatt are the two apartment-rental channels that earn hotel points, and are the fallback wherever Outsite and Nomadico have no house.
- Safety and tourist traps
- Live one ring out from the tourist core, use app taxis, and keep the phone in a front pocket in Colombia, Mexico City, Lisbon, Madrid, Athens, London, and New York. Each card names the neighborhoods.
- Weather
- No Nordics in winter, no Southeast Asia in the monsoon. New York in August is the one exception, for the four-month fall. Bogotá in October is the only stop where routing beats weather.
Year 1: Mexico, Colombia, Thailand
Late February 2027 to February 2028. $27,500 to $41,000, or $2,300 to $3,400 a month. One long-haul, Bogotá to Bangkok.
February 22 to March 4, 2027.
11 days, three for the domicile paperwork and seven in Miami. Domestic, so no visa clock.
United StatesDomicile stop: Florida driver's license and address setup. Fly Boise to Orlando on Alaska through Seattle or Delta through Salt Lake City, landing on a weekday so the license appointment is the next morning. The Declaration of Domicile takes six to eight weeks to record, so it must be notarized and filed by the first week of January 2027 to be on record before this visit; if it is not recorded by February 22, move the license appointment into the Miami week.
Three nights at the cheapest en-suite option near the license office; a hotel is the likely pick because short-stay apartments are thin there. Bring the passport, the Social Security card or a W-2, and the two proofs of address. Do the license, then the voter registration at the same office, then confirm the address is live, all before leaving.
Back to Orlando, then the Brightline to Miami, about three and a half hours. In Miami, a week at the cheapest en-suite option: a private room with its own bath through Coliving.com or an Airbnb studio at a weekly rate, in Brickell, Coconut Grove, or Little Havana rather than South Beach, which is the tourist core and twice the price. Outsite and Nomadico have no house in Miami.
Leaving: fly Miami to Mexico City nonstop on Aeroméxico, which is SkyTeam, on March 4.
All-in cost for the eleven days, including both flights and the train: $2,500 to $3,500.
March 4 to April 30, 2027.
58 days on the Mexico FMM, which allows up to 180 days per entry.
Latin AmericaStart Spanish and cooking classes here, and take the first real estate look. Cheapest big-city start in the plan and a nonstop from Miami.
Stay at Outsite Mexico City. Roma Sur has private studios and apartments, which meet the bathroom and kitchen rule without asking, from about $85 a night before the member rate. Colonia San Miguel is rooms only and cheaper, so confirm the private bath before booking it. For a nicer weekend, the Hyatt options are the Andaz Mexico City Condesa and the Hyatt Regency Polanco, the Marriott options are the W Mexico City and the JW Marriott Polanco, and Condesa DF is the boutique choice.
Base in Roma Norte, Roma Sur, Condesa, or Juárez, and do not stay in Centro Histórico. The Metro at rush hour is where phones go missing, and Uber and DiDi are cheap enough to skip it entirely. Puebla and Teotihuacán are day trips.
All-in cost: $2,200 to $3,000 a month.
May 1 to June 30, 2027.
61 days on the same FMM entry, for a running total of 119 of 180 days.
Latin AmericaSafer and cheaper than Mexico City, a real city rather than an expat enclave, and the better Mexican base for real estate research because foreign buyers have not inflated prices.
Neither Outsite nor Nomadico has a house here. The places to stay and eat are in the Querétaro map list; book from that list first. The fallback is a furnished studio in Centro Histórico or Juriquilla through Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy or an Airbnb monthly.
Base in Centro or the streets just north of it. Pickpocket risk is low by Mexican standards, and there is nothing specific to avoid. Bernal is the day trip.
All-in cost: $1,800 to $2,500 a month.
July 1 to July 14, 2027.
14 days on the same FMM entry, for a running total of 133 of 180 days.
Latin AmericaAn hour from Querétaro by bus. Two weeks to decide whether it belongs on the later-years list without paying San Miguel rent for a month. Most expensive and most foreign town in the region; test that.
Two weeks means an Airbnb studio or en-suite room in Centro or Guadiana at a two-week rate. If a hotel is the choice, the Marriott option is Live Aqua San Miguel de Allende, a Marriott partner brand, and the boutique options are Hotel Matilda, Casa de Sierra Nevada, and Rosewood San Miguel.
Base in Centro or Guadiana. Crime is low, and the only thing to avoid is the cobblestones after wine. The Fábrica La Aurora art center, the hot springs at La Gruta, and the wineries in the Dolores Hidalgo valley are the things to do.
Leaving: fly from Querétaro or Mexico City to Seattle around July 14 on Aeroméxico and Delta through Los Angeles or Salt Lake City, or on Alaska through Los Angeles or San Francisco. One checked bag is included on most Aeroméxico transborder fares.
All-in cost for the two weeks: $1,200 to $1,700.
July 15 to August 1, 2027.
17 days, with the Boise appointment in late July.
United StatesToo short for Blueground, which starts at 30 days. For 17 nights, Hyatt House or Residence Inn in downtown or Lake Union: full kitchen, points, and Hyatt House is the better use of transferred points. Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy is the apartment alternative. From 2028 on, Blueground fits.
Alaska flies Seattle to Boise many times a day. Three to five nights in Boise cover the appointment.
Leaving: fly Seattle to Medellín around August 1 on Delta through Atlanta, which is the only partner routing.
All-in cost for the half month, including both flights: $3,000 to $4,200.
August 1 to September 30, 2027.
61 days on Colombia's 90-day visa-free entry.
Latin AmericaSpring weather all year, low costs, two months of real Spanish use.
Stay at Outsite Medellín, which has three houses. El Tesoro has eight apartments and four studios, so the private bath and kitchen are built in; it is the newest house, rated 4.7, and starts at about $95 a night before the member rate. Manila (rooms, rated 4.6) and El Poblado (rooms, rated 4.0 to 4.3) are cheaper, and either needs an en-suite room confirmed. Second choice is Nomadico Medellín, from about $1,003 a month through nomadico.bookinglayer.com, again with the private-bath room confirmed. Kiin Living is the upmarket option at about $2,000.
El Tesoro sits on the quiet, upper side of El Poblado. Otherwise base in Laureles or Envigado. The Parque Lleras side of El Poblado is the tourist core and the scam zone: visit, do not live there. Main risks are phone theft and drink spiking aimed at foreign men: phone away on the street, never leave a drink, inDrive or Uber only. Guatapé is the day trip, and Jardín is the weekend.
All-in cost: $2,300 to $3,000 for the first month, including the flight from Seattle, then $1,800 to $2,500.
October 1 to October 28, 2027.
28 days on the same Colombian entry, for a running total of 89 of 90 days.
Latin AmericaCool at 8,600 feet, and good for serious Spanish because fewer people switch to English. October starts the second rainy season; afternoon showers are the cost of the routing.
Outsite and Nomadico have no house in Bogotá. The Milagro, from the directory, is here, but it has a three-month minimum, so it does not fit. Use an Airbnb monthly in Chapinero Alto or Rosales, or Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy. Coliving with a private bath is thin here.
Base in Chapinero Alto, Rosales, or Usaquén. Do not live in La Candelaria; visit it by day. Skip the TransMilenio buses and use Cabify or Uber. Pickpocketing is the main risk. Monserrate is the walk to do in the city, and Zipaquirá is the day trip.
Leaving: the long-haul of the year, all SkyTeam. Delta from Bogotá to Atlanta, Delta or Korean Air from Atlanta to Seoul, and Korean Air from Seoul to Bangkok, booked as one ticket so the checked bag rides through. The alternative is Delta to Los Angeles and then Singapore Airlines to Bangkok through Singapore, which earns Alaska miles or can be booked with card points transferred to KrisFlyer. Either way, land in Bangkok around October 30.
All-in cost, including the flight to Bangkok: $3,000 to $4,100.
November 1 to December 31, 2027.
61 days on the Thailand DTV, which allows 180 days per entry.
AsiaDry season and the cheapest good-city living on the list. Cooking classes and tailoring: the one city where a good tailor is cheap enough to have several pieces made rather than bought. Loy Krathong is in November.
Outsite and Nomadico have no house in Thailand. Serviced apartments are the local version of coliving, and nearly all of them have a private bath and a kitchenette. lyf by Ascott, from the directory, has a Bangkok property built for this. Otherwise book monthly through Booking.com with the apartment filter, or directly with buildings in Ari, Thonglor, or Ekkamai; expect $700 to $1,400 for a one-bedroom with a pool and a gym. For a splurge weekend, the Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen's Park at Phrom Phong and 137 Pillars Suites on Soi 39 are the two picks.
Base in Ari, Ekkamai, or Sukhumvit between Asok and Phrom Phong on the BTS. Khao San Road and the Grand Palace area are the tourist traps; the classic scam is a tuk-tuk driver saying a temple is closed. Violent crime is very low. One week in Chiang Mai in December, before the burning season starts in February. Bangkok Airways and Thai are the only carriers on that route and neither is a partner, so pay cash for the one-hour flight. For the week, Le Méridien Chiang Mai is the Marriott option, and a boutique hotel in the old city is the other.
All-in cost: $2,000 to $2,900 for the first month with the Chiang Mai week, then $1,800 to $2,500.
January 1 to February 28, 2028.
59 days on the same DTV entry, for a running total of 120 of 180 days.
AsiaPeak dry season on the Andaman coast. Two versions; decide by what matters most that winter.
Beach-town version: Kata. It is the one Phuket beach with a swimmable beach, a flat walkable grid of restaurants and bars, and an adult crowd without the Bangla Road chaos. Bang Tao has the densest beach-club scene but its beach and its dining hub are two kilometers apart, Surin's beach clubs were demolished in 2025, Rawai is not a swimming beach, and Patong is not worth a night. For a month in Kata, take a monthly condo or villa with a kitchen in Kata or Kata Noi. For a hotel week or the first few nights, the adults-only SIS Kata and The Boathouse are in the walkable core, the Shore at Katathani is the quiet luxury option on Kata Noi, and Le Méridien Phuket Beach Resort on Relax Bay is the Marriott property nearest Kata.
Training version: Chalong. HOMA Chalong Bay is a furnished studio with an on-site gym, rooftop pool, and coworking on one lease, from about ฿22,000 a month on a long term, minutes from Fitness Street.
Either way, the things to do are the same: a Phang Nga Bay sea-canoe day with John Gray's, a Phi Phi or Racha day with Simba Sea Trips, a Bang Tao beach-club day at Catch, Xana, or Rava followed by dinner at Boat Avenue, a day in Phuket Old Town, and Big Buddha and Wat Chalong by Grab. For a change of scene in the second month, Ao Nang in Krabi is a walkable beach town two and a half hours away by private car, with Railay, the 4 Islands, and the Hong Islands by longtail, and Krabi has its own airport. Ko Lanta is spread out and needs a scooter; skip it.
Leaving: fly from Phuket or Bangkok to Da Nang on Vietnam Airlines, which is SkyTeam and earns Delta miles. Apply for the Vietnam e-visa online before going.
All-in cost: $2,000 to $2,800 a month.
Year 2: Vietnam, Japan, England, Germany, Portugal, Spain, France, Turkey
March 2028 to February 2029. $34,000 to $46,000, or $2,800 to $3,850 a month. Two long-hauls, Tokyo to Seattle and Seattle to London.
March 2028.
30 days on Vietnam's 90-day e-visa.
AsiaBest month of the year on the central coast, and the cheapest month in the plan after Chiang Mai. Hoi An is a taxi ride away.
Outsite and Nomadico have no house in Vietnam. Use Habyt, Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy, or Airbnb monthly for a furnished apartment in An Thuong or along the beach. A private bath and a kitchen are standard at $500 to $900.
Base in An Thuong or on the Son Tra side. Crime is very low. The tourist trap is Hoi An's old town after dark, so go in the morning. Hue is the day trip.
Leaving: fly Da Nang to Narita or Haneda on Vietnam Airlines direct, which is SkyTeam, or on JAL through Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, which is oneworld.
All-in cost, including the flight in: $1,650 to $2,350.
April 1 to June 28, 2028.
89 days on Japan's 90-day visa-free entry.
AsiaSpring into early summer, the full visa allowance in one base, and a cheap yen. Kyoto week plus Kamakura, Nikko, and Hakone day trips from the Tokyo apartment. Menswear and craft for the lifetime pieces.
Outsite and Nomadico have no house in Japan. Hmlet Japan rents furnished studios from one month, with utilities included, paid by credit card, and no key money, at about ¥150,000 to ¥250,000 a month in Shibuya, Shinjuku, and Harajuku. Metro Residences has serviced apartments. Sakura House is the budget floor, filtered to apartments rather than share houses. For the Kyoto week, the Hyatt Place Kyoto and the Hyatt Regency Kyoto are the points options, and Tokyu Stay has kitchenettes and washer-dryers for cooking.
Anywhere on the west side of the Yamanote line works; Nakameguro, Shimokitazawa, and Kichijoji are the quieter choices. This is the lowest-crime stop in the plan, with nothing to avoid.
Leaving: fly Haneda to Seattle nonstop on Delta, or Narita to Seattle nonstop on JAL. Both are in network.
All-in cost: $2,700 to $3,700 for the first month with the flight in, then $2,400 to $3,400.
July 2028.
30 days, with the Boise appointment in late July.
United StatesUse Blueground, which has a 30-day minimum, with studios from about $1,700 and one-bedrooms from about $2,500 in Capitol Hill, South Lake Union, and Eastlake. Book the Boise nights separately at the Hyatt Place or Residence Inn.
Leaving: fly Seattle to London nonstop on Delta, Virgin Atlantic, or British Airways, all in network. Apply for the UK ETA online a few days before.
All-in cost, including the flight from Tokyo and the Boise round trip: $3,900 to $4,600.
August 1 to September 19, 2028.
50 days in the UK, which allows six months visa-free with an ETA and sits outside Schengen.
Non-SchengenBest-weather weeks in England, outside Schengen so the clock has not started. Savile Row and Jermyn Street for menswear. Ends September 19 to reach Munich for the middle of Oktoberfest.
Outsite has no London house. From the directory, Node London has coliving apartments with one-month minimums, and Cohabs has en-suite rooms but the directory notes six-month minimums, so check before relying on it. Blueground London is the studio option with a real kitchen, and Habyt is the platform fallback. Seven weeks in one place; London is where the monthly rate matters most.
Base in Islington, Clapham, or Hackney for a real neighborhood at a lower rent than Zone 1. Oxford Street and Leicester Square are the tourist traps. Moped phone-snatching is the crime to plan for: no walking down the street looking at the phone.
Cotswolds Way for four days with Sherpa Van or Macs Adventure handling bags and inns; the inns are boutique, and there is no Marriott or Hyatt on the trail. Bath, Oxford, and Cambridge by train.
Leaving: take the train on September 19 or 20. Eurostar from St Pancras to Paris, then the TGV or ICE from Paris to Munich in about five and a half hours, roughly ten hours door to door. Schengen day one is the day of arrival in Paris.
All-in cost: $3,600 to $4,700 for the first month with the flight in, then $2,000 to $2,700 for the nineteen days of September.
September 20 to October 1, 2028.
12 days, covering Schengen days 1 to 12. Five nights in Munich, seven in Stuttgart.
SchengenOktoberfest 2028 runs Saturday, September 16 through Tuesday, October 3, an eighteen-day year. Five nights in Munich, the 20th to the 25th: the middle week, after the opening-weekend crush, with one full weekend inside. No Oide Wiesn in 2028 (the agricultural show takes its space), so the quiet tents are the Weinzelt, Käfer, and the Armbrustschützen.
Then the train to Stuttgart, two and a quarter hours, for the Cannstatter Volksfest, Germany's second-largest beer festival. It runs from late September into the second week of October on the Cannstatter Wasen and overlaps the back half of Oktoberfest; exact 2028 dates are published a year out. Same big tents, brass bands, and Tracht, with a local Swabian crowd, beer and food at about two thirds of Munich prices, and rooms at about half. Off days: Ludwigsburg Palace, the Mercedes and Porsche museums, the Neckar vineyards.
Munich rooms double during the Wiesn, so book by spring and take the cheapest en-suite option: a private room with its own bath through Habyt or Coliving.com, or an Airbnb private room or studio. In Stuttgart the same sources apply, and Habyt has a real presence there; a week's rate for an en-suite room should come in well under the Munich number. Hotel fallback in Munich: Sheraton Munich Westpark or Le Méridien at the Hauptbahnhof (Marriott), Andaz Munich Schwabinger Tor (Hyatt). Book one Munich tent table through a reseller in advance; weekday afternoons are walk-in, weekends are not. Stuttgart weekday tables come directly from the tent operators.
In Munich, base in Ludwigsvorstadt or Schwanthalerhöhe, the neighborhoods that flank the festival grounds, or in Glockenbach for sleep; the Marienplatz to Hofbräuhaus strip is the tourist core. In Stuttgart, base in Stuttgart-Ost or Bad Cannstatt itself, which is walking distance to the Wasen. Crime is low in both; the festival grounds are where pockets get picked.
Leaving: fly Stuttgart to Lisbon on October 1 or 2 on Air France through Paris, which is the in-network routing, or take the TGV from Stuttgart to Paris in three and a quarter hours and fly Paris to Lisbon on Air France.
All-in cost for the twelve days: $1,900 to $2,800. Munich is about two thirds of it.
October 2 to October 31, 2028.
30 days, covering Schengen days 13 to 42.
SchengenLisbon's best month. One month to judge whether Portugal belongs on the later-years list.
Stay at Outsite Lisbon, which has two houses, Intendente and Cais do Sodré. Both run slow-season rates from about €800 to €1,000 a month from November through February, so ask whether the October rate can be matched at the member price, and confirm the private-bath room when booking. Yon Living solo apartments, from the directory, run about €1,100 to €2,100 and are the fallback.
Base in Campo de Ourique, Estrela, or Arroios. Alfama and Baixa are the tourist core and where the tram 28 pickpockets work. Otherwise it is a safe city. Porto is a weekend by train, and Sintra is a day trip.
Leaving: there is still no fast train from Lisbon to Spain, so fly Lisbon to Bilbao on Iberia through Madrid, or fly to Madrid and take the Alvia north to Bilbao in five hours, on October 31 or November 1. From Bilbao onward, every Spanish leg is by rail or taxi.
All-in cost: $2,450 to $3,350.
November 1 to November 30, 2028.
30 days, covering Schengen days 43 to 72.
SchengenTwo parts: ten days on a mid-tier and luxury version of the Camino Francés from the Camino de Santiago page, walking only the scenic stages and transferring the rest, then three weeks in Madrid.
Camino:
- Day 1: fly or train to Bilbao, walk the Casco Viejo for pintxos at Bar Gatz or El Globo, and take a private transfer to Roncesvalles for the night at Hotel Roncesvalles or Casa de Beneficiados.
- Day 2: walk Roncesvalles to Zubiri through the Pyrenean beech forest, the one stage everyone should walk, with a coffee stop in Hemingway's Burguete. Sleep at Hostería de Zubiri.
- Day 3: walk the river stage from Zubiri into Pamplona through the Portal de Francia. Two nights at the Gran Hotel La Perla on the Plaza del Castillo or the Pamplona Catedral Hotel, with a rest day for the city walls, the cathedral cloister, and a Calle Estafeta pintxos crawl.
- Day 5: walk Pamplona over the Alto del Perdón to Puente la Reina, the ridge with the iron pilgrims, the Eunate chapel, and the six-arch bridge. Taxi to Estella and sleep at Hospedería Chapitel.
- Day 6: taxi through to Logroño, skipping the long flat stages. Two nights at the Sercotel Calle Mayor for Calle del Laurel and a Rioja winery day at Marqués de Riscal or Bodegas Muga in Haro.
- Day 8: taxi to Santo Domingo de la Calzada and sleep at the Parador, a twelfth-century pilgrim hospital and the hotel highlight of the route.
- Day 9: walk the forest stage from Belorado to San Juan de Ortega through the Montes de Oca, then taxi into Burgos for two nights at the NH Collection Palacio de Burgos, with the cathedral and the Museo de la Evolución Humana on the rest morning.
- Day 11: AVE from Burgos to Madrid, two and a half hours.
- Bags go ahead each day by transfer service. Correos Paq Mochila stops on October 31, so in November book Jacotrans or Pilbeo, and confirm before leaving that they run the Navarra and Rioja segments that month.
- November on this stretch is cool and can be wet, with daytime highs in the 50s, so carry a real rain shell and expect one walking day to be grey. The reward is empty trails and hotels at half the September price.
For the Madrid weeks, Outsite has no house. From the directory, use Node Madrid, Smart Living Madrid, or Suiters for private suites. For a hotel week on points, the Hyatt options are Hyatt Centric Gran Vía and Thompson Madrid, and the Marriott options are the W Madrid and the Westin Palace. Base in Chamberí or Malasaña; Sol and the Metro are pickpocket ground. Spanish school, menswear and craft, the Prado, Toledo, and Segovia.
Leaving: by rail on December 1. AVE from Madrid to Barcelona, the direct Renfe or Ouigo train from Barcelona to Paris in six and a half hours, then the TGV from Paris to Strasbourg in under two hours, either as one long day or with a night in Paris.
All-in cost: $3,200 to $4,400. The Camino hotels and the winery day push it above a normal Spanish month.
December 1 to December 13, 2028.
13 days, covering Schengen days 73 to 85. Leave on day 85.
SchengenChristmas markets, open from the last week of November. Strasbourg has the oldest, with Colmar and Riquewihr a short train ride away. Strasbourg over Vienna because it is a day by rail from Madrid; Vienna has more markets and better music but needs a flight. Thirteen days because Munich used the first 12 Schengen days, so the flight out is December 13 and Christmas is in Istanbul.
Cheapest en-suite option: Colonies, from the directory, runs furnished apartments in France, and an Airbnb studio at a two-week rate is the fallback. The Hôtel Régent Petite France is the boutique choice if a hotel is wanted.
Base in Krutenau or on the edge of Petite France. Crime is low, and the markets themselves are where pockets get picked.
Leaving: fly to Istanbul on December 13 on Air France through Paris, which is the in-network routing. There is no practical rail option east of here.
All-in cost for the 13 days: $1,700 to $2,300. Food and drink drive the number.
December 13, 2028 to January 31, 2029.
50 days in Turkey, which allows 90 days in 180 by e-visa or visa-free entry and sits outside Schengen.
Non-SchengenRug stop. Seven weeks to find two or three pieces to keep for life without buying from the first shop that offers tea. Cold and grey in January, but the city is at its least crowded. Tailoring and leather too.
Use Blueground Istanbul for a studio, or an Airbnb monthly in Cihangir on the European side or Moda on the Asian side. For a Christmas splurge, the Çırağan Palace Kempinski is the boutique-grade option and the JW Marriott Istanbul Bosphorus is the points option.
Base in Cihangir or Moda. Sultanahmet is the tourist core, and the Grand Bazaar rug hustle and the shoe-shine brush drop are the scams. Use BiTaksi, and never take a street taxi without the meter. Rugs: dealer names from a trusted source before arriving, those dealers only, and ship through a forwarder rather than the shop.
Leaving: fly Istanbul to Larnaca. No Delta or Alaska partner flies this route, so pay cash on Turkish Airlines, which flies it direct.
All-in cost: $1,950 to $2,750 a month, rugs not included.
February 2029.
28 days split between Cyprus, which allows 90 days visa-free, and Egypt, which is visa on arrival.
Non-SchengenTwo weeks in Cyprus as the quiet base, two weeks in Egypt as the one fully guided trip. Best weather on the Nile, and Cyprus in February is mild, empty, cheap, and outside Schengen.
In Cyprus, use an Airbnb monthly in Limassol or Larnaca, priced at a weekly rate for two weeks, or the Parklane, a Luxury Collection resort in Limassol, for the points stay. In Egypt the tour includes lodging: a small-group Nile operator on a dahabiya or a good cruise boat, not the mass-market boats. For the Cairo nights before and after, the Marriott Mena House at Giza is the points option. The tour is discretionary and sits outside the monthly number.
Cyprus is one of the lowest-crime places in the plan. Egypt is the opposite for hassle, hence the guide.
Larnaca to Cairo and Cairo to Tirana have no Delta or Alaska partner. Cash on EgyptAir for the first, EgyptAir or Turkish through Istanbul for the second.
All-in cost for the month with flights and without the tour: $2,700 to $3,700. Budget the tour separately at $1,500 to $3,000.
Year 3: Albania, Greece, New York, Mexico
March 2029 to February 2030. $31,500 to $43,500, or $2,650 to $3,600 a month. One long-haul, Athens to Seattle.
March 1 to April 30, 2029.
61 days in Albania, which gives US passports up to one year visa-free and sits outside Schengen.
Non-SchengenFinishes the 90 days out of Schengen without padding, and the cheapest stop in Europe. Tirana in March is fine: highs in the high 50s, tail of the wet season, city open all year. The coast in April is marginal: Sarandë and Vlorë are mild but much of it stays shut until May and the sea is cold. So March in Tirana, and April is either the coast for quiet or Nomadico Kotor in Montenegro, also outside Schengen, open March and April, from about €980 a month, with a community instead of an empty resort town.
In Tirana, use an Airbnb monthly in Blloku or Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy; expect $500 to $900 for a furnished one-bedroom. Crime is low; agree the taxi fare before getting in. Berat and Gjirokastër are day trips. Corfu is a ferry from Sarandë, but that ferry day counts against Schengen.
Leaving: fly Tirana to Athens. Aegean is the only direct carrier and is Star Alliance, so pay cash for this short leg. Schengen block two starts on May 1.
All-in cost: $1,900 to $2,700 for the first month with the flight in, then $1,700 to $2,500.
May 1 to June 29, 2029.
60 days, covering days 1 to 60 of the second Schengen block.
SchengenShoulder season, before the July heat and the crowds. Either Athens with weekend ferries, or one island (Paros or Naxos) with a week in Athens at the end.
In Athens, use an Airbnb monthly in Koukaki or Pangrati, or the Grand Hyatt Athens for a points week. On Crete, Escape coliving, from the directory, works if the private-bath room is available. On the islands, use an Airbnb monthly at May rates, which are roughly half of August.
Athens: base in Koukaki or Pangrati; Monastiraki and the Metro to Piraeus are the pickpocket zones. The islands are low risk. Santorini is the tourist trap of the Aegean: skip it or one day only.
Leaving: fly Athens to Seattle on Delta, which flies Athens to New York nonstop from May through October, then New York to Seattle. Air France through Paris and KLM through Amsterdam are the in-network alternatives. Last long-haul of the plan.
All-in cost: $2,800 to $3,800 for the first month with the flight in, then $2,600 to $3,600.
July 2029.
30 days, with the Boise appointment in late July.
United StatesUse Blueground, the same as in 2028, and the Hyatt Place or Residence Inn in Boise.
Leaving: fly Seattle to New York nonstop on Delta or Alaska.
All-in cost, including the flight from Athens and the Boise round trip: $3,700 to $4,500.
August 1 to November 30, 2029.
122 days at home in the United States.
United StatesLongest stay in the plan and the most expensive block, paid for by Albania and the Mexico winter on either side. August is hot; the trade is the full fall. Menswear, real estate out of curiosity, and the city.
Stay at Outsite New York, which has two houses, Chelsea and Manhattan Midtown, and the Midtown house has a studio; price a four-month member stay there first. Coliving with a private bath elsewhere runs $1,700 to $2,400 a month in 2026 terms through June Homes, Outpost Club, SharedEasy, Cohabs, and Roomrs, and Node New York is in the directory as well. For a studio rather than a room, Blueground New York and Furnished Finder are the two sources, and Furnished Finder is usually the cheapest furnished monthly option in the city. Four months in one room for the discount; do not split the stay.
If not at Outsite, base in Brooklyn (Bed-Stuy, Crown Heights, Prospect Heights) or Upper Manhattan (Harlem, Washington Heights), where the coliving houses are and rent is a third less than Williamsburg or the East Village. Times Square is the tourist trap. Subway phone theft is the crime to plan for.
Leaving: fly JFK to Mexico City on Delta or Aeroméxico, then on to Querétaro on Aeroméxico if that is the base.
All-in cost: $3,600 to $4,800 for the first month with the flight in, then $3,000 to $4,200 for each of the other three.
December 1, 2029 to February 28, 2030.
90 days on a new Mexico FMM entry.
Latin AmericaCheapest warm place a short flight from the July 2030 Boise visit, and a second look at whichever city was not the base in year one if Mexico is still a purchase candidate. Dry season, cool mornings, no tourist crush outside the holidays.
Same housing, safety, and trips as year one: Outsite Roma Sur first in Mexico City, the map list in Querétaro. Three months in one apartment for the best monthly rate.
All-in cost: $2,300 to $3,200 for the first month with the flight in, then $2,000 to $2,800.
Budget
All-in numbers: housing, food, local transport, incidentals, and every flight with one checked bag. Low assumes an en-suite coliving room or small studio at a monthly rate and cooking most meals. High assumes a nicer studio, more meals out, and peak-season prices. Plan against the high column.
Discretionary items outside the monthly number
- The Egypt guided Nile tour, two weeks in February 2029, will run $1,500 to $3,000.
- Rugs, two or three pieces from Istanbul in the winter of 2028 to 2029, are at whatever number is set; shipping through a forwarder adds $200 to $500 per piece.
- Menswear purchases fall in London in August 2028, Tokyo in spring 2028, Bangkok tailoring in November 2027, and Madrid in November 2028.
- A Spanish school in Mexico City, Bogotá, or Madrid can happen at any point.
- Real estate visits are planned in Querétaro, San Miguel de Allende, Lisbon, and Mexico in the winter of 2029 to 2030, with no fees assumed.
- A Sun Valley ski week happens only in an Idaho winter with snow, which this plan does not schedule. Adding it means a second Idaho visit in a year and one more long-haul flight.
Wish-list stops not in the plan
Panama, Taiwan, South Korea, Hanoi, Chiang Mai as a base, Porto as a base, Italy, Switzerland, Germany beyond Munich, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Ireland, Scotland, Austin, Los Angeles, and San José del Cabo. Romania, Bulgaria, and Hungary are all in Schengen now and would compete with Munich, Portugal, Spain, and Greece for the same 180 days. The Nordics and Estonia only fit in June, which is when the plan leaves Europe. Any of them can replace a stop of the same color on the timeline without breaking the visa math.
The Schengen count, written out
The second block is 60 days rather than 90 on purpose: 139 days out would allow a full 90, but 60 leaves room to move a date without recalculating, and the extra month went to Albania at a third of the cost.
Insurance
Medical, evacuation, and transport coverage is on its own page, with carriers, brokers, costs, and the broker script.
Prices are 2026 estimates; the yen and the Turkish lira swing the most. Visa rules are as of September 2026: recheck the month before each entry, especially Cyprus's Schengen status and Mexico's 180-day discretion. Housing links go to operators, not rooms; check en-suite and kitchen before paying.
